Maritime heritage conference in Swansea

If you’ve got an interest maritime history, heritage, culture and industry you may want to look at the programme of Where Waters Meet, a two day event in Swansea 16-17th October 2013.

Day two features Wales’s very own Andrew Green, formerly Librarian of the National Library of Wales, who is facilitating a session on “Berth control: the role of museums, libraries and archives in promoting martitme heritage”. Other speakers in the programme will be talking about Oslo, Liverpool, coastal erosion and cruise tourism and much much more. There’s also going to be a community festival and literary pub tour around Swansea.

Extract from the website: “A two day event with a strong festival feel. A traditional format conference covering ‘hot topics’ together with workshops, visit and evening entertainment. This will combine with a community festival programme in the streets and venues of the Maritime Quarter of Swansea.”

Booking information and more from their website.

Thanks for this Alyson – Is there any chance that you could send out a note about the library at the National BOtanic GArden of Wales having its first Library Open Days?

The Garden’s library and archives, run by a team of dedicated volunteers, are housed inside the Science Centre and we are running a series of open days for the next 6 months so visitors to the Garden can see our resources and meet the team. SWAMP members are specially welcome to come and see the collections, and give us feedback on where we fit into the library networks. Open days are from 11-3pm, normal admission applies. The library is normally open by appointment only.

The first one is this Sunday, on Wales Fungus Day October 13th, with special focus on mycology. Details at

The other dates are Wed Nov 27 with the focus on Welsh botany and Welsh botanists; Tuesday Dec 10 – Botanical art; Sun Jan 12 – the Pre-Garden history – Middletons, Paxtons, Abadams; Tues Feb 11 – Apothecary and Physic gardens; Wed Mar 26 – Welsh plant hunters.

We would be delighted to see librarians at the se special days. Contact or phone 01558-667129 (Tuesday and Wednesday)

Thanks Alyson Margot Greer Team leader NBGW Library
